VirtualBox comes with a deb it should be able to be uninstalled from Synaptic, Vmware can be uninstalled by running as root: vmware-uninstall.pl

he VMware manual says:
If you used the tar installer to install VMware Server, remove the software from your system by running:
vmware-uninstall.pl
